Tron sequel manifesto
What I propose is a radical reinterpretation of Tron. I want to call into question all of the most basic tenets of Tron. What are these?
- glowing neon suits with circuit patterns on them
- digitizing lasers transporting people into the computer world
- always battling the Master Control Program (MCP)
- religious analogy between users and programs
If you’ve played the most recent PC game, or read the recent comic books, you will see the exact same story as before: Some dude getting sucked into a computer, losing his memory, finds himself wearing some trippy costume, knows how to play video games really well, gets hooked up with some revolutionaries who are out to oust some big brother Master Control Program. There are slight variations in the game and comic, but it is basically exactly the same.
The question I want to ask is: Does it have to be this way? Does the upcoming Tron sequel have to have the silly costumes and the MCP again? This is what I’m afraid of: that it is just going to be the same thing, but just updated to the current technology. So now it will be about computer viruses, firewalls, security patches, updating your virus signatures, blah blah blah. Doesn’t that sound boring? Fucking BORING!
So…people working on the Tron sequel, this is a message for you. Please don’t make some boring movie about internet security with a bunch of dudes wearing neon costumes zooming around on bikes. If you want some ideas, check this website where I will post my ideas, and hopefully others will have ideas too.
